More Lifestyles

Here are some recent things from my Lifestyle Illustration class.  The first piece was a calendar assignment where we were each assigned a month, the second one is an illustration for the upcoming movie The Odd Life of Timothy Green, and the last three are obviously paper dolls.

Thesis Update #4

This is a little belated, but here they are - all four of my factory farmed children are done and ready to be printed!

Note:

So, for some reason, Blogspot is putting a mint green tint over the image of the boy eating bacon, which I can't seem to get rid of.  This is only happening when you enlarge the image, though the smaller thumbnail is more accurate to the true color.  All of the other children are fine.

Thesis Update #3

It's almost the end of the semester and my thesis is wrapping up.  Below is the finished version of the third child and the pencil work for the fourth (and final) child.  Soon they will all be turned into postcards to be printed so that for my final critique I will have both a poster and postcards of each child.

Thesis Update #1

Thesis is going pretty well, I think.  I'm certainly having fun with it.  Although, I don't think I've explained what my thesis is yet on this blog...  In the last year I've become really interested in the issue of industrial agriculture.  The more I learn about it, the more disgusted I become and the more I'm drawn to buying local food.  So, for my thesis I decided I wanted to address the general lack of knowledge on the issue of factory farmed food.  I decided to do a four-part poster series using children as examples of unwitting people eating what is clearly disgusting food.  The children themselves are also unhealthy looking because they are direct products of their diets.  Below is the final version of the first poster (still subject to change), plus the original pencil sketches for the first two posters.  I intentionally gave myself extra space in the original pencil drawings so I would be able to crop them down however I wanted.  I am currently working on adding color and text to the second piece.

Again, I just want to express how much I'm enjoying this project.  Drawing chubby children is super fun!

Last week, for my lifestyle illustration class, we had to create a two page spread about a couple on an "evening out."  Being from Florida, how could I resist drawing an elderly couple on a date?!  So fun!

Lifestyles

So, I'm taking a class this semester called Lifestyle Illustration with Dan Krall.  He's awesome, but I'm struggling with what exactly makes an illustration a "lifestyle illustration."  Here is my first attempt, a two part series loosely based on life at the Green Tortoise Hostel in San Francisco:

 

 For lifestyle illustration, we also had to create three paper dolls to dress in designer clothes every week...

In other news, thesis stuff feels likes it's finally falling into place.  I'll be updating about that soon too.  Now, it's time for the weekend.

For Funsies

I got a Wacom tablet for my birthday and I was having some fun with it yesterday:

 

I'm pretty much in love with this new tablet; it's unbelievably easy to use.  And I'm super excited to have it in time for senior year - which starts in a week.  Just one more year at MICA and then I'm off into the world.

Printmaking Things And Such

A bit delayed, but I finally uploaded and edited the pictures I took of some of my printmaking pieces from the spring semester.  I have some more that need to be documented, but I'll get to that later.

The first three are a couple different prints of a copper plate, plus a detail, and the last two are of a three layer photo lithograph that I made for my litho final, plus a detail.  Not the best quality photographs, but you get the idea.

Right now I'm doing an internship at a gallery in Los Angeles.  Yay for gallery experience and being in California!

MiniThesis

For my Concepts II final, we spent five weeks working on a MiniThesis of our choosing.  I chose to draw a four-part series illustrating different scenes for this one bearded girl.  I think she's adorable.

Our latest assignment in Concepts was an 11"x17" travel poster.  The one on the left is what I turned in this morning, but after my critique I adjusted the background to create the one on the right.  Not sure which one I like better...

Another quick update - I was having fun coloring old sketches in photoshop again.  This sketch was for an etching that I did last semester.  The etching didn't turn out so well, but I still like the image.

Printmaking - Mostly

As always, I'm spending a lot of my time printmaking.  We're starting new projects in both of my printmaking classes, but here are the final products from the last assignment in both intaglio and litho...

(it's hard to tell, but there's a faint yellow overtone here.  I wiped the plate with the teal color and then relief rolled the yellow.)

This is just a sketch I made in preparation for my next intaglio project (which means you'll see this image again as a print), but I was having fun in the computer lab, so I colored it.  No reason.  Just funsies.

I've been looking at other peoples' art and illustrations more often lately and it's helping to keep me inspired on a more regular basis.  I just want to draw things all the time.  And that's a nice feeling.  On that note, spring break is a mere four days away and I'm super excited!  Can't wait to get home to good ol' Florida.  Warm weather, here I come!

Old Ladies and Cats Eye Nebulas

It's printmakin' time, so here are the first examples of what I've been doing in my intaglio class this semester.  (I would have included my first lithograph, but I forgot to bring it home to document - I will, though!)  Both prints are from a 6"x8" copper plate etched in ferric chloride.

I finally documented some of my prints from last semester and though I might share them with you.  This is just a small collection of some of the ones I liked.  When I get the chance to document more of them, I'll post those too.

This semester I'm taking two printmaking classes: lithography and intaglio.  I'm really excited for both and when we finish up our first projects, I'll be sure to post both of those.
